Roy Bhaskar Discusses The Modern World and Philosophy at ITC2013

“At the July 2013 Integral Theory Conference in San Francisco, Giorgio Placenza met with Roy Bhaskar, well known ontological philosopher of Critical Realism and Keynote Speaker at the Conference. Bhaskar was a founding member of the Centre for Critical Realism and the International Association of Critical Realism. He is currently employed at the Institute of Education in London where he is working on the application of CR to Peace Studies. Placenza has published in Integral Leadership Review and has maintained a wide-ranging interest that impinges on various aspects of reality, aspects such as the mind-body problem, philosophy, cosmology and physics.”

  1. Thanks for the interview. I enjoyed listening Roy Bhaskar at the Meta-Integral conference this year and thanks for bringing back to my focus Roy’s Critical Realism. Before over more than a decade ago I focused my M.A. thesis on Nicolai Hartmann’s “New Ontology” at the department that was enchanted by Martin Heidegger, and, at that time popular post-modernist thinkers. At conference, while listening Roy, I suddenly remembered how was difficult to defend “new ontology” arguments. I agree with Roy Bhaskar that the epistemology approach dominance (the empiricist, neo-Kantian analytic spirit) removes us from the lost center of a fiery cosmic dance, which entitles us to touch all possible plains–the existence and the system displayed in all forms of reality.

    1. Hi Rayka! Thanks for posting here + your feedback on Twitter. That’s awesome that you are a Bhaskar reader. I am, admittedly, new to his work entirely. Meaning I haven’t read a single work. Hopefully this will be remedied soon. For the time being I am learning from your comment about this problem in philosophy with distancing ourselves from the “fiery dance” of life. Yes, I say let’s get back into it! I loved Bhaskar’s point in this video about engaging with all planes of existence, and perhaps first of all recognizing these other planes in the first place. It’s very encouraging someone of his intellectual caliber is arguing for that.

      Thanks for your comment!
